Wow, first Maryland and then Michigan! Is it a plot to visit every state that starts with an “M”? (I don’t know, but rumor has it we may be in Minnesota next month…)

Actually, we were in Michigan for Dana, as she was a speaker at a Literature conference (and Pete just went along for the ride, and for moral support.) Her talk was well received, and besides a few problems with the GPS in the rental car, it was good trip.

So that was May… and now we’re looking forward to June, which just happens to be Birthday month (for both of us) and anniversary month too!

We went to Maryland in March. Really. Dana was there for 5 days, and I was there for 2…

Well, another year draws to an end, but not before seeing family for the holidays. We spent a lot of time with the gang, all the Prodoehls and Zepeckis, we ate, and opened gifts, and ate, and watched a movie, and ate, and talked, and played a game, and then we ate.

2008 was a rough year at times, but we always hope for a better future, so here’s to 2009, may it be AWESOME!

Saint Nick

The first time I tried to explain St. Nicks to Dana, she just didn’t get it. She said that stockings were for Xmas morning, and not some random day at the beginning of December. I tried to explain that that’s the way we do it in the Midwest, and figured her way was the “Back East” way. Oh, little did I know…

A quick look at the Wikipedia revealed the following: (emphasis is mine.)

While feasts of Saint Nicholas are not observed nationally, cities with strong German influences like Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and St. Louis celebrate St. Nick’s Day on a scale similar to the German custom. On the previous night, children put one empty shoe (or sock) outside, and, on the following morning of December 6, the children awake to find that St. Nick has filled their previously empty footwear with candy and small presents (if the children have been “good”) or ostensibly, coal (if not). For these children, the relationship between St. Nick and Santa Claus is not clearly defined, although St. Nick is usually explained to be a helper of Santa. The tradition of St. Nick’s Day is firmly established in the Milwaukee community, with parents often continuing to observe the day with even their adult children.

So it’s a Milwaukee thing… Now you know.

Today is the day! I don’t expect everything to be perfect, but I will settle for almost perfect. If the weather can hold out, if I can get through the day without forgetting anything, if everyone does what they are supposed to do… it’ll all be fine. And at the end of it all, Dana and I will be married. Pretty damn cool. :)

Postponed

This was a hard decision to make, but we thought long and hard about it. We’ve decided to postpone our rummage sale.

Typically held in May, we had planned on having it in June, but there’s just too much going on! So July it is!

We’ll post a note when we have a definite date, but the rummage sale is now set for July. That should leave June wide open for final wedding planning.

Valentine

We had a nice Valentine’s day. Actually, we waited until the weekend and went out for a nice dinner at Point Comfort Place in Okauchee. We really didn’t give each other expensive gifts, as we are saving up for the wedding, but Dana gave me the best valentine I’ve ever received, so it was quite the memorable night…
